Entry 9

We have a three week break and in this time we plan to look at our notes that we have written for the presentation as we have finished the majority of the work and now we need to film ourselves presenting the information and having it ready to submit by the deadline. We had planned to film on the last day before our break but we decided we did not spend enough time looking through the information we need to present so we will film after the break. At this point all of the members of our group would have had enough time to look through the individual topics that we need to present and have a better understanding of it so that we would be more confident in presenting this information during the filming session.

Reflective learning In this lecture we looked at different types of organisations and their structures a well as how they are influenced by IT techniques. We also looked at Mintzberg's 5 types of organisational structures which ranged from start-up businesses by entrepreneurs to bureaucracy's such as hospitals and law firms. There were also examples of how IT would be used daily in the business for processes such as pay rolls for the employees. There are advantages to using IT in a business such as saving time and money and being able to complete more than one task at the same time. Group work In our groups, we had made the final changes to our presentation and we have decided to film after the break so that we would know the information off by heart and will not have to rely on noted while we are recording.  We had originally planned to film this week and had someone to film us, however the timing did not work out for some members. ...

Reflective learning In the lecture we went through a PowerPoint of the content that we should include in our presentations that we would be filming. It also included the layout such as having the titles of the main topics that we would discuss in the beginning of the presentation. But first we had to include an introduction at the start and what the purpose of our business is; in this case we would be giving advice to a business on how they would be able to solve their problems through IT solutions. Group work We had a meeting in the previous week where we all looked at more IT solutions for the business problems, however we had a limited time together so we all decided on specific sections in the presentation for each of us to focus on so that we could expand on the problems and solutions. We had emailed each other the extra notes that we had written and have compiled it into a PowerPoint. The next step for our group is to have a practice run so that we can see how much time we wi...

Reflective learning In our lecture on Monday, we carried on with the presentation from the previous week which was about IT security within a business; we finished off by looking at firewalls and encryption and how hackers could change the IT system of the business as well as a short video of how easy it is for your mobile phone to be hacked. We then moved on to the next topic of cloud computing and we watched a video that showed us a brief outline of what it is and how it is beneficial to us. We discussed about how it would be used in the sense of the business and why it is suitable, such as that files can be accessed at any time from any computer.  Group work We met up as a group on Monday after our lectures to see the progress of our group work. Previously, we had listened to the recording of the interview with the business owner and we had each written what problems we found and possible solutions for it. We discussed our notes to each other then typed up the problems ...

Reflective learning In this weeks lecture we discussed the safety and security measurements taken to protect the information systems of a business. We also discussed how there can be external threats  to the business rather than just internal threats and some of these examples were natural disasters such as floods, or just power outages. This will be more disadvantageous towards companies that rely more heavily on IT systems to store their data and information. We found out that the most common crimes were by hackers who have unauthorised access to the data or even from the employees themselves that work within the business. There were also definitions of different viruses and other spam in computers at the business and how they differed from each other. Seminar The seminar work concluded of more functions that we could use on Microsoft Excel to save time typing out the data in each individual cell and we put it to practice in some business data tables. We fo...
